Jonathan Maphosa is the founder and managing partner of the firm.

Jonathan specialises in commercial law; banking & financial services regulation; corporate mergers, acquisitions & disposals; employment law and tax law.

He advises on the structuring and implementation of significant transactions as well as joint ventures, asset disposals and acquisitions in South Africa and abroad.

Jonathan’s clients include amongst others; National Lotteries Commission (NLC), Central Energy Fund Group of Companies (CEF), Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA), Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), Air Traffic Network Services (ATNS), North West Development Corporation, Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) and The South African Insurance Association (SAIA).

Recent major transactions that Jonathan has advised on include, advising the South African Mine Health and Safety Council on its acquisition of one of the world’s largest explosives testing facilities. He has recently started advising one of the most advanced global digital payments solutions and card scheme companies on legal aspects related to the regulation of a range of their digital payments evolution initiatives.

Jonathan was appointed a member of the Expert Group for the review of the South African National Payment Systems Act and in 2019, appointed a P.R.I.M.E Finance Expert.

Prior positions held by Jonathan include, amongst others, serving as Nedbank Group Chief Legal Counsel and General Counsel for BankservAfrica, the largest automated clearing house and payments system operator in Africa.

Jonathan is a former Deputy General Counsel and Head: Monetary and Financial Law Division of the South African Reserve Bank where he provided specialised legal advisory relating to payments law, financial markets; international monetary arrangements, securities lending programs, bond trading, investment management agreements and held custody over the South African Reserve Bank’s suite of global master agreements.

Jonathan was lead legal counsel for the South African Reserve Bank in the negotiation of the BRICS multilateral Inter-Central Bank Agreement which governs the swap transactions and instruments ratified by all BRICS countries, with an initial value of US$ 100 billion.

He has served on the board of the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA), a position he held for over 8 years, including as former CCASA President and board Chairman for the period 2014-2016. He was also a board member for a 2 year term of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Docket Advisory Board, which is a board tasked with assessing the content, quality of and global reach of a legal publication which reaches over 35 000 in-house counsel across 75 countries.

A number of Jonathan’s articles are published in national and international legal journals, magazines, websites and business media. He has published, as solo author, a book on green tax laws.

Jonathan is the 2014 Winner of the ACC Top 10 30-Somethings Award and Winner of LegalWeek Africa Legal Counsel of the Year Award, 2015. He is a Fellow of the Mandela Washington Fellowship (Georgia State University, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies).

Caleb Asiedu is an Associate Director at Maphosa Attorneys Incorporated.

Caleb specializes in general and commercial law litigation, labour law, as well as public and administrative law. Over the course of his career and in previous roles, he has drafted numerous legal opinions for clients such as Transnet SOC Limited, Broadband Infraco SOC Limited and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa  and Southern African Music Rights Organization on matters varying in complexity.

Caleb specializes in general and commercial law litigation, labour law, as well as public and administrative law. Over the course of his career and in previous roles, he has drafted numerous legal opinions for clients such as Transnet SOC Limited, Broadband Infraco SOC Limited and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa  and Southern African Music Rights Organization on matters varying in complexity.

Caleb was part of the legal team that represented the Public Protector, in the much-publicized review application launched by the South African Reserve Bank and ABSA Bank Limited amongst others in 2017.

In 2016, Caleb was part of the delegation that accompanied and represented ICASA at the Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committee Inquiry into the conduct of the Board of Directors of the SABC.

Caleb holds an LLB degree from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
